1. Yesterday, we watched the Bayern Munich game. They won the game, but more importantly, they had won the league last weekend at an away game, so this one was their chance to celebrate at home. After the game was the usual ceremony where they all get their individual awards and they get to hold the plate (? Is that what they call it?), and there is a lot of confetti, and everyone takes pictures. And after that is when the large boots full of beer come out, and all the players chase each other around the pitch and throw the beer on each other. For me, those beer showers are always the best part of the celebration for me. I love the playfulness. But this celebration was bittersweet. It included the retirement of one of my favorite German players, Thomas Mueller. He has played for Bayern his entire career. It was what he dreamed about as a kid. He is a great player but also a great human being and a leader on the pitch and off. I don’t know what’s next for him, but I know whatever he decides he wants, doors will open. I would love to see him in the MLS, but I’m not sure he wants to keep playing. The team won’t be the same without him.
2. It’s Mother’s Day, which is good but also seems to get harder every year. My mother and mother-in-law are still around, and actually both are doing well these days (knock on wood). But I have a couple of friends who have lost their mothers in the last year. And last summer I lost an aunt who helped take care of me when I was a baby, and she had continued to be a good friend. But I’m still grateful for being able to stop and celebrate all the mothers in my life, and to celebrate my fur baby with snugs and some catnip mouse play time.
3. Oreo Thins, Tiramisu. I miss the fluffiness of the real thing, but the flavors are all there. Delicious!
